EXTERNAL GRINDING

Probably the most commonly used industrial grinding process, external cylindrical grinding is typically used for the highest level of throughput without sacrificing precision. The method is used to achieve the tightest tolerances, although much slower than in lathe applications.

ADVANTAGES OF EXTERNAL GRINDING

  • Useful for very hard materials.
  • Can be performed with less pressure on work surface.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT

As its long history has unfolded, grinding techniques have evolved from stones, mortar and pestle, stone mills and water wheels. But the introduction of modern grinding techniques for industrial applications can be traced to the early 20th century.

FUTURE APPLICATIONS

New grinding fluids have increased the productivity of some of the machines used for external grinding. These fluids have also been essential in achieving higher removal rates and enhancing quality.
