GRIT BLASTING
Grit blasting (commonly known as sand blasting) is a process that uses abrasive particles— accelerated to high speeds—to remove contaminants from a material’s surface and condition it for finishing. Methods of propelling the particles include compressed air, liquid streams, vapour streams and mechanical projection methods.
ADVANTAGES OF GRIT BLASTING
- Removes unwanted materials from the substrate surface.
- Clean, active metal surfaces are exposed and prepared for new coatings.
- Useful for removing rust, mill-scale, old paint and other contaminants.
- Removes sand and scale in the fettling of castings, and for dressing of billets and stampings.
ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT
The original form of grit blasting can be traced back to Mother Nature herself. Our ancestors observed how the constant flow of water and sand wears against surfaces, smoothing and ridding them of surface imperfections over time.
FUTURE APPLICATIONS
Today’s safety and technology trends shape the way for tomorrow’s advancements. Current trends in the technique, such as dustless blasting, are gaining attention as a new and improved approach to abrasive blasting. In addition to the methods listed, Cadorath will be adding plastic media in the near future.
