PRECIPITATION HARDENING

Precipitation hardening, also known as age hardening or particle hardening, is a heat treatment process used to increase the strength of malleable materials. It’s considered the principal treatment for strengthening alloys of nickel, copper aluminum, magnesium and titanium, and other non-ferrous metals. The technique involves the formation of fine particles (or precipitates) that act to block the movement of weaker areas of the substrate. Some steels, such as stainless steel, can also take advantage of the process.

ADVANTAGES OF PRECIPITATION HARDENING

  • Relatively low distortion of base alloy during treatment.
  • Increases yield and tensile strength of most alloys.
  • Increases through-hardness.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT

Early studies of the phenomenon of supersaturation were part of the history leading to the contemporary application of precipitation hardening.

FUTURE APPLICATIONS

Used in a variety of industries, Cadorath frequently uses precipitation hardening for strengthening aviation parts and components.
