ULTRASONIC INSPECTION

A technique based on the propagation of ultrasonic waves through base materials. At Cadorath, the method uses very short ultrasonic pulse waves. An offshoot of the process, called ultrasonic thickness testing, is ideal for checking thin wall thicknesses to reveal potential flaws or weaknesses.

ADVANTAGES OF ULTRASONIC INSPECTION

  • Ideal for inspecting steel and other metal alloys.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT

The first recorded examples of using ultrasonic testing to detect flaws in solid material occurred in the United States in the 1930s, patented at a later date by Dr. Floyd Firestone of the University of Michigan.

FUTURE APPLICATIONS

At Cadorath, this technique is used for detecting flaws in aircraft parts, usually formed from more exotic alloys.
