HONING
An abrasive machining process that creates precision surface grinding—typically on a metal workpiece—by scrubbing an abrasive grinding stone along a controlled path. At Cadorath, honing is used primarily to improve the geometric form of a bore to improve surface finish.
ADVANTAGES OF HONING
- Produces a controlled surface condition, often unobtainable by other methods.
- Flexible honing tools are relatively inexpensive.
ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT
Honing houses a special tool, called a honing stone, or hone, to achieve precision results. The choice of abrasive material is usually driven by the characteristics of the workpiece.
FUTURE APPLICATIONS
Modern advances in abrasives have made it possible to remove much larger amounts of material than was previously possible. The technique has displaced grinding in many applications, wherever “through machining” is possible.
