SILVER PLATING

SILVER PLATING has been used since the 18th century to provide cheaper versions of household items that would otherwise be made of solid silver, including cutlery, containers of various sizes and many appliances, such as refrigerators and dishwashers. Today it is also widely used among the aviation industry for corrosion resistance.

ADVANTAGES OF SILVER PLATING

  • For applications in electronics, silver is sometimes used for plating copper substrate because of its lower electrical resistance.
  • Frequently used for high-quality variable capacitors.
  • Also used for press-fit solutions on spines, journals and bearing cages.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT

One of the earliest forms of silver plating was Sheffield Plate, a layered combination of silver and copper used for many years to produce a wide range of household articles. Almost every article made in sterling silver was crafted in this manner.

FUTURE APPLICATIONS

Cadorath’s technicians recommend silver plating not be used for parts exposed to high humidity environments where cracks can occur in the plating and expose underlying metals to corrosion.
